Smell This

Years ago a friend lent me a copy of the book, Perfume: Story of a Murderer. She said it was a little odd and she wasn’t kidding. The movie isn’t any less bizarre. In fact it does a pretty good job of bringing the book to life and making it slightly more palatable. Off the top of my head, though, I can’t think of any author who has managed to make an unfeeling, single minded, selfish character likeable and this, in either form, is no exception. I do remember the book bogging down in the middle and that didn’t happen on screen, for which was truly grateful. There are some nice performances that I was glad I took the time to see and I was surprised to see that I’d just enjoyed the star, Ben Whishaw, in The Hour.
